How to install MetaSurf:

MetaSurf is currently available for Firefox and Chrome web browsers. It's free, takes less than two minutes to install and allows safe surfing for young people.

  1. Click on free download – Firefox Add-­On
  2. Download MetaSurf for Firefox
  3. You may get a grey box on the top left hand side of your toolbar which says 'Firefox is preventing this site (family­‐safety.metacert.com) from asking you to install software on your computer'. Click 'Allow'.
  4. You will then see a software installation grey box with the words 'Install add‐ons only from authors you trust'. The MetaCert add‐on will be inside this box. Highlight it and click 'Install now'.
  5. Close Firefox and reopen. The MetaCert logo will be added to your toolbar. Click on the drop-down arrow on the right hand side and go to 'settings'.
  6. Download MetaSurf for Firefox
  7. Click on 'Enable'
  8. Download MetaSurf for Firefox
  9. Enter a password and ensure it is something that you as the adult will know and not something that children or young people could guess.

  • Now children can browse the Internet safely. All of the known adult webpages will show this label:
  • Webpages will only be accessible when the correct password has been entered in the MetaCert settings. If a user tries to access a page that has been blocked by the carer, they will see this: "MetaCert believes that the site you are attempting to access may contain adult content. As a precaution access has been blocked. This safety feature can be removed by the password holder (usually a parent, teacher or guardian)."

  • Adult users can disable the control by entering their password in the settings prior to browsing and enable the security settings when they finish browsing.
